Notes on understanding your bicycle, making thoughtful changes and heading out with what you need.

Small observations. Useful habits. Better days on a bike.

Start with a notebook, not another adjustment.

A maintenance log gives each change a little context. When something starts clicking, shifting poorly or feeling different, it helps to know what happened just before it.

Read the workshop note

Record the date, approximate distance, conditions and the symptom before reaching for a tool. A noise heard only when pedalling out of the saddle is a different observation from a noise heard while coasting. Describe what you can reproduce without declaring a cause too early.

Photograph the original arrangement before taking anything apart. Keep removed parts and small hardware organised. For each adjustment, note what changed and how you checked the result. Change one variable at a time where possible; otherwise a successful fix can be difficult to explain or repeat.

Use the service instructions for the exact component, including specified tools, lubricants and torque. A value from a similar-looking part is not a substitute. If the work involves steering, brakes or structural damage and you cannot verify it, have a qualified mechanic check the bike before riding.

A useful entry

Observation: what happened, and under what conditions?
Work: what was inspected, replaced or adjusted?
Reference: which component manual was used?
Result: what changed on inspection and a controlled test?
Follow-up: what still needs attention?

The goal is a record that your future self can understand, rather than a perfect spreadsheet.

Write down the interface before buying the part.

“Gravel”, “road” and “mountain” describe a category, not a complete compatibility specification. Model numbers and the connections between components are more useful.

Read the parts note

Start with the exact make, model and generation of the existing component. Photograph the markings and keep a link to its official technical documentation. Then describe what the replacement must connect to: the frame, another component, or both.

For a wheel change, the checklist may include axle type and spacing, freehub interface, brake mounting and tyre/rim compatibility. For a drivetrain change, record the shifters, derailleurs, cassette, chain and crankset as a system. A matching number of gears alone is not a compatibility check.

Make two lists: confirmed specifications and unanswered questions. Check manufacturer compatibility charts for the actual combination. If an adapter is proposed, verify that it is supported for those parts and for the intended use.

Only then compare price, weight and availability. Include any required tools, consumables or workshop labour in the cost. Keeping the old part until the replacement has been installed and checked can make troubleshooting easier.

Pack for a short ride before a long one.

A familiar loop with the actual luggage can reveal more than another evening rearranging bags on the floor.

Read the packing note

Load the bike with the water, food, clothing and overnight kit you intend to carry. Check bag attachment instructions and the bike's load limits. Before moving, check that luggage cannot interfere with the wheels, brakes, steering or lights, including when the bars turn and components move.

Choose a short local loop with an easy way home. Start gently and pay attention to movement, rubbing and anything that changes how the bike handles. Stop to investigate a problem rather than riding through it.

Practise the ordinary tasks: reaching a snack, taking out a jacket, locking the bike and accessing the repair kit. Put frequently used items where they can be reached without unpacking everything. Keep items that must stay dry in suitable waterproof storage.

Afterwards, write down what moved, what was hard to reach and what you used. Repeat the check after changing the packing arrangement. The best setup is one you have tested on your own bike with your own load.

Give the route a few ways to change.

A good trip plan includes places to shorten the day, find supplies and get home. Those options make it easier to enjoy the road in front of you.

Read the travel note

Divide the route around practical stopping points instead of choosing daily distance alone. Surface, climbing, luggage, daylight and weather can all change how long a section takes. Leave time for food, repairs and an unplanned stop.

Check current access rules, closures, weather and local advice before departure. Verify water and food stops rather than assuming a map symbol means a place is open. Carry an offline map and a way to keep essential navigation powered.

If trains, buses or ferries are part of the plan, check the operator's current bicycle policy for that specific service. Reservations, packaging and bicycle spaces can differ between services on the same route.

Mark an easier alternative and a few exit points. Share your intended route and check-in arrangement with someone you trust. After the trip, distinguish the route you actually rode from the route you planned; those differences are often the most useful notes for next time.
